Episode 12: Enemy Reinforcements

While Famine spits blood from a split lip and faces War, whose nostrils flare and chest heaves with furious pants, I study my new enemy.

For some reason, I expected the Four Horsemen to look the same, like carbon copies of each other. I was dead wrong. While Famine has blue, tiger striped skin and long cornrows knotted in a bun with all the refined grace and fashionable wardrobe of an aristocrat, War is—well, he fits the typical description of a demon with horns, but he screams gang enforcer vibes. A demon enforcer who would bust a cap or curb stomp a bitch to send a message.

Straight black hair falls to his chin and outlines a broad, rugged face. Square jawline and wide set lips. Black, ridged horns curl outwards from his temples like twin scythes. I shiver. A neatly trimmed, black beard brackets his pinched mouth. He has the same large, yellow eyes as Famine, and is equally tall at over six feet, but the resemblance ends there.

War wears a pair of fitted black slacks and a loose blazer with no undershirt. My eyes widen, and grudging appreciation warms my blood. This demon is positively ripped. Next to the slender, toned physique of Famine, he’s a behemoth. Clearly defined muscles cut down his chest. He has chiseled abs and such perfectly sculpted pectoral muscles that they look like square blocks. It’s fucking outrageous. His body builder physique puts the statue of David by Michelangelo to shame, and he was supposed to be the epitome of male beauty.

Fucking outrageous but sexy as hell.

Confusion quickly follows my appreciation. I have no idea what sub-species of demon he is. Colorful tattoos crawl along his body to cover unnaturally pale skin as white as exposed bone and flex with each rippling movement of those muscles. At first, I think the tattoos are of mythological creatures like dragons and griffins, but upon closer inspection, they’re more demonic. And if I didn’t know any better, I could’ve sworn a few of those intricately detailed, lifelike tattoos were watching me.

A shiver races down my spine.

Distantly, I try to remain objective and analytical rather than fall under the spell of the muscular, dominant male. If he’s large, hopefully that means he’s slower than Famine. If so, I might stand a chance of standing toe to toe with him.

Until I realize it’s now two against one, and I have a sprained ankle, dislocated shoulder, and possible concussion. I can’t decide whether to laugh or cry. Kat and I had planned to eliminate them one at a time. Famine had been our first target, since he seemed to have the more tolerant approach to humans compared to the other three—and now I know why. After seducing and killing him, we were going to hunt down the other three.

War had been the last demon on our list of targets. Most of the other rebels feared Death the most out of the Four Horsemen, but not me and Kat. Death is inevitable.
